GLASSeco is made from 89.4% recycled materials. The glass we use is 100% recycled post-consumer waste; which we collect and reprocess ourselves so we can verify its provenance. We do not purchase recycled glass cullett from any other sources. Our resin is a non-emitting, non-toxic resin that has been purpose-designed for us. If you would like more technical information please call our technical director - Donald Crawley. GLASSeco Limited has signed up to the Mayor of London's Green Procurement Code. See www.greenprocurementcode.co.uk BREEAM does not count kitchen worksurfaces as part of its building assessment, and fixtures & fittings do not yet form part of the BREEAM code. When this level of assessment is reached we will apply for a rating in its Green Guide. GLASSeco has been successfully specified in the first commercial interior in the UK to gain a LEED GOLD Certificate. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a green building rating system created by the US Green Building Council. Derrick Barendse of HOK said: "Thank you to all the suppliers who supplied us with products that helped achieve exemplary performance. We were able to achieve all 4 Innovation in Design Credits. Thank you." Recycled content calculation for LEED:
Post-consumer content (33/50) 66% Pre-consumer content (11.7/50) 23.4% Total recycled content 89.4% GLASSeco is fully accredited by OnePlanetProducts, a global certification system set up by BioRegional and the WWF. (More info at the bottom of this page). GLASSeco has been independently tested by CERAM Testing & Environmental, a subsidiary of British Ceramic Research Ltd. Registered company number 1960455.
Sterile GLASSeco was also evaluated by SteriTouch Limited using an independent laboratory using the JIS Z 2801:2000 test method to evaluate the antimicrobial performance of SteriTouch additives in GLASSeco against MRSA and E.coli. The theoretical limit of bacteria detection is 10 CFU (Colony Forming Units). If no bacteria are recovered the result is reported as “<10CFU”. GLASSeco, incorporating 0.5% SteriTouch, reported a <10CFU – a 99.9999% reduction in bacteria against the control worktop sample. Leachability GLASSeco made with recycled TV/computer screen glass has been independently tested for leachability by NuLifeGlass at Sheffield University. In summary, results showed a 10m2 worksurface would release less than 0.1g of lead in a year. As GLASSeco is non-porous there is no mechanism for lead to migrate from the middle of the material to the surface and we would therefore expect a massive drop-off in the leaching rate with time. There are no specific regulations applying to leachability of kitchen worksurfaces, so the Safe Drinking Water Act was used as a guideline. The test results showed that even when the GLASSeco worktops were tested under conditions designed to encourage leaching, the amount of lead released was way below the legal limit for pipes/fittings used for the supply of drinking water. The University test results were stunning – even when the samples were tested for 28 times longer than need be. The US market is expected to lead the development of this recycled product. If you are interested in using recycled TV/PC GLASSeco please speak to our technical department to discuss applications and technical details further.
